    Clarivate Plc released the latest update to its annual Journal Citation Reports™ (JCR™) for the year 2023. According to the report, the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) for the YUGATO in 2022 is 0.8.

    The Journal Impact Factor is a metric that assesses the influence of a journal based on data gathered from the Web of Science Core Collection. The various factors can affect citation rates, including the publication volume, citation patterns within the subject area, and the type of journal.

    In this issue, Yu et al. examine the regulatory mechanism of the Dracocephalum moldavica L. extract in intestinal inflammation in hypertension.
    Veličkov et al. elucidate the role of the interstitial cells of Cajal and nerve fibers by examining their distribution in the rat stomach in diabetic gastro enteropathy.
    The mechanism underlying the changes in cell cycle progression and cell proliferation in an environment of 2-fold elevated atmospheric pressure is studied by Son et al.
    Using murine gammaherpesvirus 68 to obtain very large read-through transcripts, Kara concludes that qPCR should be supported by alternative methods such as northern blotting to identify the roles of the transcripts.

    Topal et al. describe the link between apifloral diversity and endemism in the eastern Mediterranean honeybee forests of Türkiye within the context of planning biodiversity conservation.
    Morozova and Shkute characterize the genetic structure of the population of the invasive species zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha in Latvia, using microsatellites as molecular markers.

    The paper by İğci and Aytaç presents the phytochemical composition and in vitro analysis of the wound-healing activity of Verbascum stachydifolium Boiss & Heldr. var. stachydifolium growing in Turkey.
    An article in animal physiology highlights the relationship between ATP and protein kinase A in isolated rat cardiomyocytes (Ozturk et al.).
    In a comprehensive Review Article, years of research on the fish retinotectal system based on extracellular microelectrode recordings from the tectum opticum are summarized (Damjanović et al.).
    A novel approach to simpler exophytophagous caterpillar identification with descriptive matrices is presented (Trajković et al.).
    Species diversity of Trichoptera larvae was assessed in the streams of the Kastamonu (Cide)-Sinop (Ayancık) coastal region in Turkey (Oezalp and Kueçuekbasmacı).
    An article in agronomy describes the macromineral consumption of Pleurotus ostreatus var. Florida and its growth and nutrient dynamics at the beginning and end of cultivation in different culms (Iossi et al.).
    The paper by Oguiba et al. in agri-food biotechnology examines the Ascochyta fabae disease of Vicia faba L. The results of phenotypic and molecular characterization, pathogenicity and in vitro biological control indicate that disease aggressiveness is negatively correlated with susceptibility to the biocontrol strains Bacillus siamensis B8 and Bacillus mojavensis B31.
    Understanding the relationship between soil properties and plant responses is important for agricultural production and conservation. In the paper by Bogosavljević et al., the soil on consolidated limestone is categorized and its relationship with grassland vegetation is defined.

    The YUGATO is a multidisciplinary open-access journal that covers original research in life science.

    Issue 74(4) contains articles in a range of subjects in cancer research, including a paper describing three newly identified long non-coding RNAs, AC077690.1, AL049874.3 and AP00137.1 closely associated with the PI3K-Akt-mTOR and FOXO signaling pathways which can serve as novel therapeutic targets in prostate cancer (Li et al.); a paper describing the expression and genetic variants of IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10 genes and their associations with colorectal cancer and colorectal liver metastases which supports the use of interleukin genetic variants as biomarkers to detect and predict clinical outcomes (Hazgui et al.); an article studying the anti-cancer activity of the polysaccharide extract from Lactarius chrysorrheus in different cell lines which provides insight into the development of a potential anticancer agent (Mutlu et al.).

    A paper in biochemical toxicology examines the fibrinogenolytic activity of Montivipera raddei snake venom enzyme; the presented findings will guide studies aiming to identify new fibrinogenolytic enzymes, their pathology and their biotechnological potential (Atasoy and İğci).

    A work in environmental pollution that investigates the lethal and sublethal effects of the pyrethroid insecticide tau-fluvalinate used extensively in agricultural activities on the non-target organism Gammarus roeseli shows that its use must be carefully reconsidered to minimize exposure risk (Sari).

    A study in conservation biology conducted to investigate the level of genetic diversity in two populations of Centaurea amaena, an endemic species listed as critically endangered in Turkey, presents essential information for establishing effective conservation strategies (Atasagun).

    In 2022 the Serbian School of Molecular Biology celebrated half a century of existence. Molecular Biology and Physiology, as a novel study group, was founded in 1972 at the Department of Biological Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics, University of Belgrade. The University of Belgrade was the third university in the world to establish molecular biology studies and a department of biochemistry and molecular biology. The founder was the academician Dušan Kanazir, together with Ana Savić (1936-2022), his only assistant at the time, who is remembered and honored in the In Memoriam (Matić and Kojić).

    The YUGATO is a multidisciplinary journal that covers original research in a wide range of subjects in life science. The new issue contains original articles in biomedical research, including the first report of 10 years of practice from a Serbian referral center on the oncologic and reproductive outcomes of fertility-sparing surgery for borderline ovarian tumors, as well as the finding that altered arginine metabolism in colon cancer is a sign of the increased proliferative potential of tumor-adjacent tissue; also, original results that the sesquiterpene fraction F1012-2 of Eupatorium lindleyanum DC. regulates the p53/NF-κB signaling pathways in human breast cancer and that hypophosphorylation of retinoic acid receptor alpha inhibits triple-negative breast cancer cell migration and invasion are presented, including the finding that erianin, a dibenzyl compound found in Dendrobium chrysotoxum Lindl. extract, a promising agent in the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme, triggers apoptosis in U373 and A172 glioblastoma cells.

    A study of pathogen characteristics in a medical microbiology paper presents a proteomics analysis of altered metabolic pathways in classic and hypervirulent isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae; as the virulence differences between hypervirulent and classical forms are poorly understood. K pnemoniae is an opportunistic pathogen and global threat causing a wide range of infections.

    A paper in environmental microbiology shows the results of research of two decades of changes in the diversity of freshwater cyanobacteria in waters intended for human consumption.

    A paper in mycology describes effective methods of preserving the gene pool of valuable edible and medicinal mushrooms, which includes the maintenance and correct identification of the biology, morphology and phylogeny of preserved strains of the Pleurotus eryngii species complex in culture collections.

    Environmental pollution is represented by a study of trace metal and metalloid bioaccumulation in three centipedes (Chilopoda), Clinopodes flavidus, Cryptops anomalans and Eupolybothrus transsylvanicus identified as bioindicators suitable for monitoring metal pollution.

    An article in conservation biology provides the results of analysis of the influence of foraging habitat characteristics on nest-box occupancy and breeding parameters of the European roller, Coracias garrulus in Serbia, and offers practical recommendations for the continuation of the nest-box program and the allocation of conservation measures.

This issue contains original articles in biomedical research that includes the results of a combined study of cancer and metabolic disease in an examination of dysregulation of the PER3 clock gene and its only pseudogene in colorectal cancer and type 2 diabetes; investigation of the association between superoxide dismutase 2, glutathione peroxidase 1, xeroderma pigmentosum group d gene variations, and head and neck squamous cell cancer susceptibility; a study of tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand Fas and fibrinolytic factors in the assessment of malignant pleural effusion; combined analysis of KARS mutation and p16INK4a and p14ARF methylation status in locally advanced rectal carcinoma treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy; SET and MYND domain-containing protein 2 (SMYD2) as a prognostic biomarker associated with immune infiltrates in cervical squamous cell carcinoma and endocervical adenocarcinoma is considered; the beneficial effect of ginsenoside-Mc1, which reduces cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury in hyperlipidemia; low back pain, a common disorder, is examined in rat intervertebral disk cells during BNIP3 overexpression and triggered autophagy and apoptosis.

    Environmental and experimental botany is represented in an assessment of differences in anatomical and hydraulic properties of the root and xylem of three willow (Salix L.) clones during phytostabilization after exposure to elevated cadmium, and environmental soil science in an examination of different patterns of leaf morphological variation in Quercus frainetto Ten. growing on different soil types.

    We are pleased to announce the publication of issue 74(1) of YUGATO, an open-access online multidisciplinary journal published by the Serbian Biological Society. This issue contains original research in biological sciences, such as examination of the spread of alien and potentially invasive freshwater snail species in the Danube River, bacterial metabarcoding analysis of mineral waters in Serbia, analysis of miRNA-lncRNA-mRNA profiles in liver tissue, as well as molecular medical research, including the investigation of gene polymorphisms in acute ischemic stroke, promoter methylation and treatment response in patients with chronic hepatitis, assessment of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients receiving intravitreal injections, the study of the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by smoking and traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of COPD, as well as the molecular effects of an anti-aging chemical substance used in skin-care products.

    Clarivate has just published updated citation metrics that have been released in Journal Citation Reports (JCR), and we are very pleased that the IF of YUGATO has increased from 0.554 to 0.719.

  • Editorial Announcement

    In the summer of 2014, the YUGATO was singled out as a scientific journal that had veered away from the ethical publishing practice of scientific journals and was placed on the list of predatory journals. Members of the scientific public in Serbia directly affected by the accusations were mobilised, and after thorough investigation it was concluded that many of these accusations were founded. As a result, the Serbian Biological Society and other co-publishers of the journal replaced the entire editorial team. The new Editorial Board was confronted with the difficult task of resolving many outstanding issues which primarily affected contributors and scientific research in life sciences, as well as official bodies that support scientific publishing in Serbia.
